The issues of Homeland Security and Defense present challenges and technological opportunities in areas ranging from building protection to cybersecurity to initial response to detection of chemical, biological radiological, nuclear and explosive (CBRNE) agents and devices.
The extremely broad range of technologies currently available, the speed of development of new technologies, and the numbers of end users involved in the Homeland Security effort create special challenges for the development of standards in these areas. (more)
First HSARPA Contracts on Track for January; Worth $250 Million

The Homeland Security departments recently formed advanced research projects agency is on-track to begin negotiating in January more than $250 million in contracts for innovative technologies to counter biological or chemical threats to the U.S.
The spending priority will go to near-term ideas that can be moved from the drawing board to deployment in 6 to 24 months, said Dr. Penrose Parney Albright, who leads the Homeland Security Advanced Research Projects Agency (HSARPA). (more)

Yes, said Alan Paller, director of education programs at the SANS Institute.
An IG report can be turned into an action plan, Paller told the recent Federal Information Assurance Conference. The idea came from a survey performed by SANS across government and industry, and was elicited from a specific agency CIO, Paller said. (more)
